Cranford Firecracker 4 Miler Race Review

Happy 4th of July!!!

I woke up nice and early this morning in order to run the Cranford Firecracker 4 miler.  The race takes place in Nomehegan Park in Cranford, NJ and starts at 9:30am.  I hit the road around 8am and made the most important pre-race stop.  DD!

The parking for this race is easy because they allow to park in the Community College parking lot across the street from the park.  I quickly parked my car then headed to go get my packet.

The atmosphere is like a party and they have a really good local vendor turnout for their mini-expo.  I grabbed my race packet and quickly headed back to the car to drop it off.   Around 9am I went back to the start area and made the necessary bathroom pit stop.  Love that they have flushing ones here!

I went to the start around 9:15 am and waiting patiently for the gun (or cannon, that’s what they had today!) to go off.

Today we had the triple H’s in NJ…hazy, hot and humid.  Not your perfect running conditions.  I didn’t sleep that well last night so I started more towards the back.  I decided to run on how I feel and not push myself too much.

I think I started a bit too far in the back because I had to maneuver around a bunch of walkers.   I hit mile 1 in 9:50.  I actually felt really good at mile 1 so I picked up the pace a bit and finished mile 2 in 9:18.  At mile 2 the race had a water stop so I grabbed a cup  I am not coordinated enough to drink and run at the same time, so I walk through all water stations.  I started running again and passed mile 3 in 9:17.  Negative splits, I’m liking this!

A little past mile 3, I passed my deceptively fit race lady.

See her? She’s the blonde in the blue shirt.  She is like in 60’s and looks good!

By this time I was super hot.  I ran by some older gentlemen with a hose and he pointed it right at me and said, “you are one of the cuter ones” and sprayed me.  Ummm, alright :).

I could finally see the finish line and finished mile 4 in 8:51.

My time: 37:32 according to the Garmin.  I didn’t pass the start line till almost 33 seconds after the gun.  We were timed gun to chip.

I grabbed a water and saw this delightful site.

YES PLEASE!!!!!

One sweaty, hot 4th of July race done!  Time to fire up the BBQ!

Here’s our swag + an unphotographed cotton t-shirt

I have a pint glass from 2009, 2010 and now 2011.  They all have the t-shirt theme from the year printed on them.  Love it!

Anyone else run a 4th of July race?
